“Kazuhiro Soda depicts a fascinating, harsh, stunning world.” Berlinale has debuted a pleasant pageant promo trailer for a cute Japanese documentary movie titled The Cats of Gokogu Shrine, the latest work made by Japanese doc filmmaker Kazuhiro Soda. This purely observational doc is about road cats; Soda beforehand filmed road cats in his doc Peace (2010). An ample group of cats has arrange home across the Shinto shrine in Ushimado. Some native residents handle them, whereas others are disturbed by their mess. The filmmaker observes their co-existence with kindness, precision and occasional involvement. In this humble little movie, the traditional small Gokogu Shrine is the observatory of the advanced relationship between individuals and nature. A chronicle of the inconvenient reality on how even nature doesn’t match our civilized life. This movie is premiering on the 2024 Berlin Film Festival kicking off this month. It seems like a beautiful portrait of life on this small city, about all of the people and all of the cats collectively, and the way they work together and spend their time.
