Doja Cat revealed that behind the scenes of among her most renowned style minutes, she was in fact “super ill.”
The rap artist, 27, spoke with L’Officiel in a recent interview about her all-red, sequined search for Schiaparelli throughout Paris style week. Doja said she “wanted to do something really major,” which resulted in being covered head to toe in 30,000 hand-placed Swarovski crystals. While Doja looked show-stopping on the outdoors, she said she was fighting significant stomach problems that day.
“I got to Paris, and I did a few shows before Schiaparelli. Super smooth, super easy, fun, loved it. I didn’t realize I had to get up at four in the morning [the day of the show] to get there by five or something,” Doja informed L’Officiel. “So we get there, and I didn’t realize till I sat down in the chair that I had gastroenteritis. So I had gotten super ill.”
Doja said it seemed like “the twirling of a knife” inside her stomach while preparing yourself for the huge occasion. She likewise credited the glam group for being helpful at the time — consisting of makeup legend Pat McGrath, who “kept on giving me ginger ale and all these different things to help settle my stomach.”
“The whole crew was so sweet. The whole glam team was so understanding and so sensitive and kind. It was great and very professional,” Doja continued. “I was trying to joke around and make light of the situation, but as time progressed, it only got worse. My stomach felt like there was a blade in it, and it was just spinning 100 miles per hour. I never felt pain worse than that—and on one of the most important days of my life!”
Despite hammering out extreme discomfort, Doja still wanted to be executed a prolonged procedure to attain the last appearance.
“So I had my arms out, I was sitting down, and I had underwear and a bandeau on,” Doja said. “They started with a layer of red paint, and they just covered me in that and then a layer of glue, and then I think they dusted glitter on top. Then the crystals.”
After all the discomfort and suffering, Doja handled to pull it off. When asked if it deserved it, Doja said: “Yeah, definitely. I’m very, very proud of it.” She likewise included that she’s “down to sacrifice my comfort” for the sake of style, and “do anything for that fantasy that I have in my head.”
