After almost being euthanized since of a “outrageous” factor a Hudson Valley cat is now up for adoption.

Lulu’s Story

Back in December of 2023, a 13-year-old Himalayan cat called Lulu was brought into a regional vet’s workplace to be euthanized since it was reported that she was urinating beyond her litter box. Before Lulu was scheduled to be euthanized the veterinarian called the Dutchess County SPCA to speak with and see if they concurred that the medical diagnosis for euthanization was inaccurate or not.

Valid Reason for Euthazation?

After consulting together the veterinarian and the DCSPCA both concurred that the urinating problem Lulu was experiencing was NOT a factor to euthanize her according to News 10 and when they took her back to the shelter in Hyde Park they had the ability to effectively detect her. Once they took a look at Lulu they found that she had urinary crystals which is why she wasn’t utilizing the litter box. Lulu’s condition was quickly treated with an unique diet plan according to the DCSPCA.

Why Euthanization?

The Dutchess County SPCA Executive Director Lynne Meloccaro informed News 10 that euthanasia actually equates to a “good death”, implying it ought to be something that’s thought about if the animal is suffering and will not have the ability to recuperate from whatever is ailing them. Obviously, that wasn’t the case with Lulu. Meloccaro likewise said, “Although it is a pet parent’s personal choice about when to euthanize their animal, at DCSPCA our company believe the only ethical method to continue is to figure out with a vet’s input that the animal can no longer experience the Five Freedoms that are the bedrock of an animal’s lifestyle”.

The DCSPCA explained that the 5 flexibilities are:

Freedom from appetite and thirst
Freedom from pain
Freedom from discomfort, injury, or illness
Freedom to express typical habits
Freedom from worry and distress

Euthanasia Can be a Valuable Tool

In some cases, euthanasia is a tool that can stop a family pet from suffering after all other alternatives have actually been checked out, “If an animal is so ill approximately behaviorally challenged that they can no longer, in essence, be a dog or a cat, then euthanasia is an important tool for their relief,” said Meloccaro.
