Cats love to get involved and cause mischief wherever they can, from taking up residence in supermarkets to sticking it out in 10 Downing Street.

Cat biologist and behaviourist Roger Tabor told the BBC that some felines just want attention, but ‘most cats don’t do this’ and ‘these are the oddballs.’

But can we control the cats decide to go rogue and set up sticks where they please?

Well according to this expert, it isn’t quite this straight-forward as it sounds – as your feline’s go-to spots reveal a lot about their personality and development.

Ginger cat Garfield and black cat Lupin found fame at Sainsbury’s in Ely, Cambridgeshire, and Aldi in Haverhill, Suffolk.

Garfield – ‘Mr Sainsbury’s’ – amassed thousands of followers on social media before his death in 2019 and Lupin’s Aldi antics prompted dozens of people to photograph the cat.

But it’s not only these two that have caused a stir down the aisles, Twitter account @Bodegacats_ has shared many pics of our feline friends in the supermarket.

Shedding light on these cats’ favourite place to hang out, the behaviourist, from Brightlingsea in Essex, told the BBC that felines who love supermarkets are among the most social of their kind.

He said: ‘They’re not only very relaxed, but seem to thrive on being where it’s warm and they get attention.’

As such, these cats tend to have been socialised from a very young age and thrive on human interaction.

However, Roger says they are very much in the minority – as cats have evolved to be wary of people to ensure their safety.

To the contrary, cats who love relaxing in shops are ‘not intimidated’ and have a tendency to make ‘fast friends’.

Cats in a clinical setting are not ideal, but for more than five years fluffy ginger cat Henry has been a regular visitor to Addenbrooke’s Hospital in Cambridge.

He has amassed more than 5,000 followers on his Facebook page, and although he has a comfortable home near the hospital, the seven-year-old cannot keep away.

Staff at the Cambridge hospital treat Henry as one of their own but are keen not to let him inside.

According to Roger, cats who are drawn to hospitals crave human interaction.

He added: ‘The positive reinforcement they gain from meeting people outweighs the negatives of being constantly put back outside.’

What’s more, Roger says that ‘cat burglars’ that like to invade their neighbours’ homes didn’t have a ‘normal developmental pattern’ in their first few months.

As such, they become ‘fixated on toys which [they] think of as prey.’
