ANN ARBOR, MI — Staff coming to the Humane Society of Huron Valley in Ann Arbor early Saturday early morning were consulted with almost 2 lots animals, a minimum of one scared and cold.

According to the gentle society, 19 birds and one cat were left outside the building in the early hours of Saturday, April 29.

All 19 birds remained in a single metal cage, while the cat was left in a little cage on a bench. Humane society staff said the cat was terrified.

The birds consist of 17 parakeets and 2 cockatiels.

The gentle society specifies it has some video footage, which is being evaluated by detectives. It appears the cat was left by somebody various than the individual who left the birds.

“We want to remind folks that we understand hard times, and we are here if you need help,” specified Tanya Hilgendorf, CEO of the Humane Society of Huron Valley. “But leaving animals in a cage or crate outside all night is neither safe nor humane.

“Companion parrots do not tolerate cold weather well. It was just luck that our hardworking facilities person came to work in the wee hours and noticed the birds while doing other work. The poor, frightened and shivering kitty had a note, but it didn’t contain useful information.”

Temperatures over night Saturday were a low of 47 degrees. According to Petco.com, parakeets must be kept in an environment in between 65 and 80 degrees and parakeet owners must be “cautious of extreme temperature changes.”

“When folks abandon animals on our property, it leaves us and the animals at a disadvantage,” Hilgendorf said. “It’s always best when the owner gives us the animal’s history since the animal can’t tell us themselves. Our medical, behavioral, and adoption placement teams use background information to help ensure we give the animals what they need to thrive. Even if you’re bringing us a lost animal, we need to know where the animal was found so that we can try to get them back home.”

Anyone with details about the abandoned birds or cat is asked to call (734) 661-3512. To get aid with pet food or short-lived housing for your animal or to give up an animal, call the Humane Society of Huron Valley’s consumption department at (734) 661-3528.
