After 2 years in Galesburg, Bird’s flock of electrical scooters have actually flown the nest.

A WGIL listener/reader just recently asked: What took place to the scooters that were seen around Galesburg the last couple of years?

For the response, we relied on Galesburg City Clerk Kelli Bennewitz, who said Bird Scooters notified last fall it was pulling its operation from Galesburg.

Bennewitz said:

Bird scooters run in Galesburg in 2021 and 2022. They ended operations in Galesburg on November 27, 2022. When ending services in Galesburg, Bird mentioned the business was evaluating its city portfolio with the objective of building a self-sustainable portfolio of cities. As the total portfolio was lowered in this area, they likewise ended services in Galesburg, suggesting that they identified it was not financially practical to run in a city without adequate distance to other cities run by Bird.

The City of Galesburg continues to permit the operation of certified electrical scooter business, per Chapter 112.60 of the Galesburg Municipal Code. If a diverse scooter business has an interest in running in Galesburg in the future, the treatment for them to do so stays available.
