Yolo Audubon will sponsor a chicken walk on Saturday, Oct. 28, 2023, from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m., on the Davis Cemetery in honor of our good friend Ed Whisler, who sadly handed away on July 4, 2023.
Whisler was one of many high birders and wildlife biologists in our space for the previous forty years. He was a former president of Yolo Audubon, co-designer of the West and North Davis Pond areas, a conservationist, activist, and educator.
Twenty years in the past, Ed found Western Bluebirds nesting within the old tree on the Davis Cemetery. This was the primary time in thirty years that Western Bluebirds had nested in Davis. The nest field path alongside the greenbelt from Veterans Memorial to North Davis Ponds was initiated by Ed. Western Bluebirds (and Tree Swallows) are actually widespread in Davis and alongside Putah Creek on account of this nest field program.
The Halloween area journey to the Davis Cemetery was led by Ed for a lot of years and has been a favourite amongst Yolo Audubon members. This walk will retrace Ed’s steps to search for late fall migrants and incoming winter resident birds together with warblers, woodpeckers, and sparrows. Joshua Greenfield, Donna Jury, and Ken Kemmerling will co-lead this walk.
Anyone serious about birds is welcome. The occasion is free and for all age ranges. The group will meet on the Davis Cemetery entrance positioned at 820 Pole Line Road in Daivs. The cemetery has some uneven floor and moist grass. Bring water and binoculars if in case you have them. Heavy rain or wind cancels the occasion.
