Last Friday, Bird Island obtained a vital, probably life-saving “facelift” simply in time for fall migration.
RGV Fishing Area and Waterway Cleanups organized a cleanup for Bird Island on the “Y” of the Brownsville Ship Channel on Sept. 29, 2023.
RGV Fishing Area and Waterway Cleanups, a Texas non-profit organization devoted to preserving the Rio Grande Valley’s ecosystems clear, accomplished its first cleanup in September 2018.
According to Richard Hitchcox, the founding father of RGV Fishing Area and Waterway Cleanups, Captain Henry Rodriguez, with Henry Charters, a director on the cleanup board, initially introduced up the concept of doing a cleanup at Bird Island.
For the previous eight years, Rodriguez has organized unbiased cleanups at Bird Island to make sure a debris-free atmosphere to assist the birds residing there.
