Cal Cuthbert has been watching birds for a number of years within the Portage space, and hails from Delta Beach. He shares an update on chook populations across the area.
“There’s there’s numerous snow buntings going by way of proper now predictably,” says Cuthbert. “These are little finches, they usually nest up within the excessive Arctic. They’re coming down now. I believe most individuals are accustomed to snowbirds or snow buntings. The winter birds — among the pine grosbeaks, frequent pink polls, and so forth — are coming by way of proper now. There are a number of American tree sparrows, numerous juncos, or some folks name them snowbirds, however they’re not likely snowbirds right here. Snowbirds are what we name Snow buntings, Juncos are these little gray-back, white-bellied little guys which can be hopping round in your yard in feeders.”
He notes there an enormous numbers of them at occasions. Cuthbert explains they will largely be gone in a few weeks, and we’ll be in search of snowy owls.
“Bird numbers are cyclic by nature usually, maybe moreso with the winter finches and pink polls,” says Cuthbert. “One winter we’ll have lots of of them. The subsequent winter, should you see one or two, you are doing good. And it is the identical with crossbills and a few of these species.”
