Thanks to the ladies of Ukuthunga Handmade, knitted birds are making a distinction for the Cape Parrot—South Africa’s solely endemic parrot!

 

Mpumalanga, South Africa (15 March 2024) — The Cape Parrot Project has many large hopes for 2024 and plenty of helpers and heroes working very exhausting to assist these hopes take off. Amid the folks working behind the scenes, are the the unimaginable girls of Ukuthunga Handmade and their knitted birds which are making a distinction.

The Cape Parrot Project is an ever-growing conservation effort a part of the Wild Bird Trust that, since 2009, has solidified its place as champion of the Cape Parrot’s future—South Africa’s solely endemic parrot. In reality, this parrot is so South African, its aesthetic is an unimaginable inexperienced and gold coincidence!

But the hen species faces an enormous problem, given its endangered standing. Navigating the plight takes many considerate and impactful threads, which is why efforts like these of Ukuthunga Handmade are as vital as they’re.

The girls of the non-profit neighborhood organisation are behind the Cape Parrot Project’s knitted birds. Sixty girls from Mpumalanga communities are suppliers due to their crocheting skills because the arms that make stunning crochet creations—just like the Project’s ‘knitties’.

When the crochet parrots are bought, this helps fund the Cape Parrot’s work!

Beyond birds, the ladies a part of Ukuthunga Handmade aren’t any strangers to extremely lovely wildlife knits—from lions to giraffes and even the tiny tooth mouse.
