The uncommon bird called the hoopoe bird was recorded on video by Castle Espie’s reserve Manager, Maurice Turley.

Castle Espie Manager Maurice Turley said identifying the uncommon bird was an amazing stroke of luck.
He said, “An uncommon Hoopoe was identified near Castle Espie in the North Strangford location. Hoopoes do not breed here, however they can in some cases be blown off course throughout their spring migration in between Africa and southern Europe.
He included, “It is fantastic to see this exotic-looking bird, with its distinct crest in the area, and appears to be remaining around and gladly feeding.
“Every once in a while, we get an unusual bird appearing, generally throughout times of high migration, and they are a welcome addition to our essential native animals.
“Strangford is an extremely important area for migrating birds, with tens of thousands relying on the habitats of Strangford Lough along their migration routes”.
