They demonstrate how much Newport has actually altered throughout the years – from the vast St Joseph’s High School in Duffryn to the river wharfs and dockland location. Do you keep in mind Newport appearing like this?
This is Tredegar House in 1989 when the historical estate was under the care of Newport council and it was yet to be turned into a visitor destination. To the right of your home are the stables, to the left homes and barns. There is no indication of the car park, playing location and coffeehouse there today.
This is the River Usk in 1970 above Newport’s Transporter Bridge. This is an interesting picture revealing all of Pill’s housing prior the excellent clearance task in the 1970s where whole streets, deignated as run-down neighborhood housing, were destroyed. On the far right there are 2 white structures – this is Handiland running beside Church Street and Commercial Road, with Dowd’s workplaces behind. Running together with the river is Mill Parade with different engeneering works serving the dry dock. The next roadway along, to the left of Commercial Road, is Courtybella Terrace and beyond is a huge grid system of homes that consisted of Baldwin Street, Jeddo Street, Lime Street, Robert Street and Arthur Street.
Another interesting view of the Tredegar House estate, this time taken in 1980. Note 2 lines of trees ranging from your home into the fields beyond – said to line an old roadway from your home to London. In this picture there are acres of undeveloped land and no housing, grocery store, schools or the caravan website.
Fast forward to 1982 and we have St Joseph’s RC High School in Duffryn and Nightingale Court in front. The school had a big monolith in front surrounded by trees, a chapel and ignored Tredegar House lake.
This is the Royal Gwent Hospital in 1992, looking from Mendalgief Road towards Belle Vue Lane. To the left on the image is White Heads factory, in the centre Cardiff Road and Pill and to the far left is the Friars building, nurses accomodation and even the Civic Centre is simply noticeable.
Here’s an excellent picture of the city centre from above. Commercial Street with H Sammuel to the left, Bridge Street even more up, the previous Passport Office right, the BT building in the far right-hand corner and the spire for Newport Market.
