This year’s Christmas turkey at Morrisons costs more than a one-way flight from London to New York in January.

At £147, it is understandable why the 7kg The Best Organic Bronze Turkey with a security tag on it went viral on social media overnight.

People on Reddit rushed to the comment section after a stunned shopper shared a photo of the pricey bird, which serves eight to 12.

‘For that price, I would expect it to dress itself in foil, adjust settings of the cooker, climb in voluntarily and shout me when it is nearly done,’ one comment read.

Another user replied: ‘For that it can peel the spuds and pour me port afterwards as well.’

Twitter’s No Context Brits also posted a photo of Morrisons’ bird, with the caption: ‘Broken Britain indeed’.

Fortnum & Mason, one of the most luxurious department stores in England, sells a Free Range Bronze Turkey for just a couple of pounds more.

With the bird weighting between 7 and 8.5kg, it is possible shoppers can also get more bang for their buck at their flagship store on Piccadilly, London.

‘I thought Morrisons was supposed to be cheap. But it is only £2.50 cheaper than Fortnum & Mason for the same sized bird,’ one man tweeted.

Meanwhile, another pointed out that Morrisons’ bird is ‘organic’, while the one at Fortnum & Mason is ‘free range’.

Regardless, amid the cost-of-living crisis only worsening, people have economised as much as possible for the holidays, giving up trips, presents and premium dinners like this one.

Charging £20 per kilo, Morrisons ranks at the very top for most expensive bird for the festivities amongst high-street supermarkets.

Ocado’s Kelly Bronze free range turkey costs £15.56 per kilo, while Waitrose’s free range bronze featherhead is £14.

Morrisons also has a cheaper option on their shelves, only costing £4.99 per kilo.

A spokesperson for the supermarket told MailOnline: ‘This turkey is the most premium organic product available in our offering and the price of £20 a kilo is in line with the market price.

‘A similar sized turkey, Morrisons British large whole turkey, is available to buy for £4.99 per kg, costing around £31.44.’

It comes as it emerged that the headline price for a fresh turkey centrepiece for Christmas dinner is now around 25% more expensive than a year ago.

This is largely because of increased farm costs and the impact of bird flu.

Frozen turkeys are also more expensive, with an average price increase of 18.1%.
