Mixed fortunes for birds in 2023 Red List update

The recent 2023 IUCN Red List update has offered each constructive and unfavorable information tales amongst a few of the world’s threatened fowl species.

Several species have been reclassified to a much less threatened class, together with three species of stork from Asia: Greater Adjutant, Lesser Adjutant and Painted Stork. The former two species ae now listed as Near Threatened, having beforehand been Endangered and Vulnerable respectively, whereas the latter has moved from Near Threatened to Least Concern. 



Painted Stork was downlisted to Least Concern within the 2023 update (Jon Mercer).

Another success story is that of Millerbird, an Acrocephalus warbler endemic to the Hawaiian islands, which has been downlisted from Critically Endangered to Endangered due to translocation efforts.

However, there are some losers within the latest update. Citron-throated Toucan has skilled appreciable inhabitants declines, shifting from Least Concern to Near Threatened because of the ongoing impact of forest loss in South America, whereas Palm Cockatoo has been uplisted from Least Concern to Near Threatened because of habitat loss.

A notable change in Europe includes Great Bustard, which is now handled as Endangered having beforehand been Vulnerable.

In the 2023 update, a number of species had been assessed for the primary time since they had been described. Wangi-wangi White-eye, discovered on a single Indonesian island, debuted as Endangered because of trapping strain from the Indonesian songbird commerce, whereas Principe Scops Owl, endemic to São Tomé and Príncipe in Africa’s Gulf of Guinea, was listed for the primary time as Critically Endangered.

Dr Ian Burfield, Global Science Co-ordinator at BirdLife International, stated: “Birds are nicely studied and nice indicators of wider environmental well being. The uplisting of any species to a better risk class is a worrying sign that extra motion is required. Conversely, the downlisting of iconic species like Greater and Lesser Adjutant to decrease classes reveals that conservation works, particularly when it’s sufficiently resourced and supported by native communities.”
