This is my long past due gratitude post for Ari Bird. Her art supersizes common items– bread clips, cigarettes, trucker sunglasses, and, well, go look! Ari nails “huge novelty.” I am a huge fan (pun 1000% planned).
When I was at Kid’s Fairyland in Oakland Ari and I collaborated, though we didn’t truly see each other. I work from house and she remains in park bring back art as painter. However we were both artists in Fairyland’s current Drawn Together live-art occasion and auction. My piece was well gotten however hers — huge “puffy sticker labels” of Fairyland icons– truly knocked it out of the (style) park!
This previous June, she was an included artist on KQED:
She’s influenced by items that are strangely pleasing, like the wonky graphics on a fruit-packing box, the texture of the completely packaged dollar-store toy, or notes and doodles scrawled on a paper by a kid and after that deserted. “My expression is tactile and somatic,” states the artist. “I tend to process my environments, feelings and habits in my body initially. Prior to intellectualizing or picturing things, I have the impulse to act or do.”
