Wholesale rates stood at 275 yen per kg since Friday, increasing 31 pct from the average in December in 2015 to strike a nine-year high, according to egg seller JA.Z-Tamago Co., a system of the National Federation of Agricultural Cooperative Associations, or Zen-Noh.
Egg rates tend to drop in summer season when need reduces, while increasing towards year-end on Christmas-related and other seasonal need.
