Veteran broadcaster Charlie Bird will lead a special fundraiser walk in Co Wicklow in aid of Samaritans this April.
The former RTÉ News Correspondent was diagnosed with Motor Neurone Disease (MND) in 2021 and continues to work to raise awareness for organisations like the mental health charity.
He has said he gave his support to Samaritans after he found himself in a dark place when he was diagnosed with MND three years ago.
The Hand of Friendship Walk will take place in Avondale Forest Park on Sunday 21, April.
“I want to extend the hand of friendship to all carers across the country. I now have first hand experience of the valuable work they do,” he told followers on social media platform X, formerly Twitter.
“I am still hanging in. And in April I will be leading a walk in Wicklow for all Samaritan volunteers. Details to follow.”
Registration for the event will soon be available on the charity’s web site.
“I am so excited to be asked to lead the Samaritans walk in April in Avondale,” Mr Bird mentioned. “Samaritans is a great organisation and its branches and volunteers deserve our support for extending the hand of friendship.”
More than 500 folks joined the previous broadcaster final April in Avondale for the primary walk in assist of Samaritans.

Mr Bird lately informed followers that his well being reached “another crossroads” as he repeated his dedication to assist these “in dark places”.
He raised over €3.5 million for the Irish Motor Neurone Disease Association and Pieta House as a part of his Climb with Charlie marketing campaign.
