Birdwatchers, maintain your eyes peeled, a uncommon sighting of the “Devil Bird” in Upstate New York has been reported and extra may very well be flocking to your space.

The anhinga, a waterbird with a snakelike head and dagger sharp beak, has been showing far north of its ordinary nesting areas.

Tim Wing, a chook watcher from Oneida County, took pictures and logged a sighting in Rome, NY of a flock of twenty-two anhinga in April 2023 on eBird, an internet web site to doc chook sightings.

These winged water creatures were also spotted in New York City this spring for the first time since 1992, according to the New York Times.

According to the Cornell Lab of Ornithology, the bird’s title comes from the Tupi Indian language of Brazil and loosely interprets to “devil bird” or “evil spirit of the woods.” Unlike different diving birds, its feathers will not be waterproof. This permits the predator to submerge itself within the water and stalk their subsequent meal of freshwater fish.

Despite its foreboding nickname, anhinga will not be a hazard to people.

Typically this chook is discovered within the south, anhingas noticed in America are typically in locations like Texas, Florida, and up into the Carolinas come summer time. As their home habitats are altering with rising local weather temperatures, some birds just like the anhinga are being pressured into new nesting areas outdoors of their typical migration ranges.

Yahoo reported that whereas seeing uncommon birds in your space could also be enjoyable, these new feathery neighbors causes competitors for assets amongst native species.
