Hi all — I began birding about 3 years in the past with the appearance of the pandemic.  I bought my subject guides and joined e-bird however I’m nonetheless studying a lot day-after-day. But some birds are so comparable that it’s an actual problem to determine simply who you took an image of.

I’m up in Portland, OR at a convention and sneak away one morning to drive the auto tour at Ridgefield National Wildlife Refuge.  I ‘m planning a future bucket on this tour.

The Daily Bucket is a nature refuge. We amicably focus on animals, climate, local weather, soil, vegetation, waters and word life’s patterns.

We invite you to notice what you might be seeing round you in your personal a part of the world, and to share your observations within the feedback beneath.

Each word is a document that we will confer with sooner or later as we attempt to perceive the phenological patterns which might be quietly unwinding round us. To have the Daily Bucket in your Activity Stream, go to Backyard Science’s profile web page and click on on Follow.

I get plenty of birds I do know, the Starling, Turkey Vulture, Red-Wing Blackbird and the Great Blue Heron together with another cool pictures. But the chook within the title picture stumped me.  He was fairly a distance away and I solely bought one shot earlier than he took off. He has the beak of a woodpecker kind chook and the wings striping typical of sparkles. My preliminary guess was Northern Flicker however the head shade is unsuitable or perhaps he’s a juvenile.  I can’t discover this chook within the subject guides.

Next a raptor flies over.  I’ve simply seconds to snap a shot. It’s a shot straight up within the air. Silhouetted towards the sky he comes out a bit of darkish however I lighten the picture sufficient to see the colour sample below the wings.

Northern Harrier or Goshawk?

Go to the sphere guides and there are two raptors with comparable patterns and it arduous to see different marks. I hope it’s a goshawk however it might be a harrier.

And lastly these darn LBBs (Little Brown Birds).

A white throated Sparrow?

He principally had his again to me and I bought nice butt pictures.  This is the one one the place he turned his head and seemed my means. I’m going again to the sphere guides and there are a number of sparrows with a white throat. Once once more there are not any further figuring out marks.

So simply who’re these guys? Inquiring minds need to know. What do you do if you solely get one shot in unhealthy lighting.
