Bird-like dinosaurs that measured up to 74 million years earlier didn’t hog nests; rather, these beaked dinosaurs shared common nests where a number of female nestmates typically laid more than 20 eggs together, which these feathery dinos then brooded to keep warm, brand-new research study recommends.

Most dinosaurs are believed to have actually laid eggs “en masse” and buried them in the ground for incubation, like crocodiles and other cold-blooded reptiles do today. But not Troodon, a little predatory dinosaur that was carefully associated to modern-day birds and which resided in the late Cretaceous, 74 million to 66 million years earlier. Researchers were already knowledgeable about brooding habits in some theropods — a group of bipedal, mainly meat-eating dinosaurs that consists of Tyrannosaurus rex and Velociraptor — and tape-recorded an ultra-rare dinosaur fossil brooding atop its eggs in 2021.
