SOUTHBURY — Eagles, hawks and all kinds of birds of prey flock in winter to the Shepaug Hydro Generating Station in Southbury, feeding on fish and extra within the flowing water under the dam.
And hen followers of all ages collect there as effectively, having fun with a view of the raptors and different birds on the Shepaug Eagle Observatory, which is now open for its thirty eighth season.
The observatory is run by FirstLight, which owns and operates the Shepaug Hydro Generating Station, the most important hydroelectric station within the state. The space gives residents a singular alternative to view birds of prey — even bald eagles — of their pure habitat.
It is now a wintertime custom for hen watchers of all ages to move to the dam hoping to get a glimpse of a raptor feeding within the water, hovering excessive above it or settling to relaxation on the banks of the river and in close by treetops. The hen followers include binoculars, cameras and telescopes in hand. Red-tail hawks, sharp-shinned hawks, goshawks, nice blue herons and numerous waterfowl are sometimes noticed, together with the bald eagles.
Sometimes as many as 10 eagles are noticed in a single day, in keeping with FirstLight. Last season, hen watchers spied an eagle daily the observatory was open.
Last season marked a report yr for eagle sightings on the observatory, with 32 eagles noticed on a single day, essentially the most recorded since 1985, organizers stated.
The observatory opened for the brand new season final month, and it will likely be open from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Wednesdays, Saturdays and Sundays via March 10.
