A Bird Rock block is restoring a custom of embellishing its trees with lights in a collective neighborhood occasion and prepares to turn the switch the day prior to Thanksgiving.
The custom began in the 5500 block of Waverly Opportunity in 2009 to honor among the block’s earliest locals, Rita O’Neil, who was 97 at the time.
” She was enthusiastic about the eucalyptus trees on the block and had them dealt with when they were ill,” stated resident Erin Wyer. “Rita was getting on in life and we wished to do this for her. All of our kids were young, so we had the time and capability to get included.”
Locals strung lights on their trees and turned them on at the exact same time. That very first year was “wonderful,” Wyer stated.
O’Neil passed away right after, and Wyer didn’t understand how impactful the occasion would be for the remainder of the community.
In 2011, after a few of the lights had actually fallen off or broken, the locals chose to duplicate the common lighting. They had to change some of the lights, “we were more arranged that time,” Wyer stated with a laugh.
However as the community kids grew older and more associated with school and sports, the lighting customized was up to the wayside.
A few of those kids are now away at college, and locals desired an appropriate homecoming for them. Next-door neighbors reviewed the lighting concept.
” Even the more recent next-door neighbors got included, and one has a 2-year-old, so the custom is beginning once again with a brand-new generation.”

Locals pooled their cash to purchase brand-new LED lights and spend for a cherry picker to raise volunteers to the tops of the trees to string them.
” It’s a great deal of work. We removed the old lights and strung brand-new lights,” stated resident Kana Lavinsky. “We attempt not to staple the lights into the tree as much due to the fact that we do not wish to harm the tree, so we need to be thoughtful. The work goes on throughout the day and everybody hangs out and talks. … A lot of us moved here at the exact same time, a lot of of our kids were the exact same age and would run around in the street together. It implied a lot to get to do it once again.”
Eucalyptus trees on the street in addition to trees on personal property are embellished, Lavinsky stated. While some locals were covering the trees in lights, others were on the ground sweeping up leaves and other particles that fell.
” After COVID and not seeing a great deal of individuals on our block, everybody got included,” Wyer stated. “Even the more recent next-door neighbors got included, and one has a 2-year-old, so the custom is beginning once again with a brand-new generation.”
The most significant objective, she stated, is that “everybody come out on the exact same day and in fact see each other and simply play in their backyards. It’s so unique due to the fact that you do not see that as much.”
Lavinsky included that “the satisfaction is everybody getting together, and when the lights begin, individuals like to stroll our streets. Households take in this manner when they stroll their canines or take their kids to Bird Rock Elementary [School], so it’s great.
Regional citizen and realty representative Shawn Rodger stated she matured in Point Loma with “stunning views” however she wished for the neighborhood feel that her Waverly Opportunity house now offers.
” I enjoyed all your homes where kids would play in the streets,” she stated. “That’s what I desired, and now I get that with my kids. … This community has actually been there for each other in times of requirement. It’s actually unique. Our block is special.”
Rodger stated the tree lighting “brings everybody together” and “revives the vacation spirit.”
” When it was all illuminated that very first time, I felt happiness regardless of any other challenges,” she stated. “The joy it gives others is incredible.”
The lights will be switched on Wednesday, Nov. 23, the day prior to Thanksgiving, when the community kids are house for the vacation. ◆
