(WBOY) — The Transportation Security Administration says a lot of guests are putting their family pets in their carry-on bags and sending them through the X-ray makers at airport security checkpoints.

Though animal travel constraints differ by airport and airline company, something is universal: Pets need to never ever be evaluated through an X-ray system, the TSA says.

On Tuesday, the TSA shared photos from current events in which pets were found inside bags that were being X-rayed.

“Pets are often treated like family members and as such, sometimes travel with their humans,” said Robert Duffy, TSA Federal Security Director for LaGuardia Airport. “That’s why it’s valuable to become familiar with the security procedures for pets and how to go through the checkpoint security screening process quickly and easily.”

The TSA said air tourists are permitted to bring little family pets aboard airplanes, and they can be evaluated at security checkpoints in addition to their owners, however there is an ideal method to do it.

The TSA shared actions on how to properly evaluate a family pet:

  • Bring the animal to the checkpoint in a hand-held travel provider.

  • Remove the animal from the provider right before the screening procedure begins.

  • Put the empty travel provider on the conveyor belt to be X-rayed.

  • Never send out a family pet through the X-ray tunnel.

  • If possible, bring the animal through the walk-through metal detector throughout screening. However, a leashed animal can stroll through with its owner. When in doubt, look for assistance from a TSA officer.

  • After going through security, return the animal to its travel provider far from the security checkpoint.

Aside from screening, family pets need to constantly be kept in their providers, the TSA says, unless they are licensed service animals.

The TSA said other methods you can alleviate your animal through the security procedure consist of getting your animal utilized to the travel provider ahead of time, keeping an eye out for “working” dogs to prevent any disturbance in their work, and understanding where to discover pet relief locations.
