Rare Giant Insect in Arkansas, Are There More?

Can you picture walking into Walmart and seeing a big bug on the outdoors wall of the store? I do not understand what you would do however I’d absolutely call somebody with a huge fly swatter. So, it’s an advantage I didn’t see this bug and a person called Michael Skvarla did.

Skvarla was operating at the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville when he saw it. The insane thing is he discovered it back in 2012 however misidentified it up until today. Now he operates at Penn State. With more research study into this bug, this bug hasn’t been seen in North America in 50 years and it’s never ever been seen in Arkansas.

How Big is This Insect?

The press release specifies that the bug is a  Polystoechotes punctata or huge lacewing. It’s wingspan has to do with 50 millimeters which is quite huge and you would absolutely observe it.

Skvarla said in journalism release;

“I remember it vividly, because I was walking into Walmart to get milk and I saw this huge insect on the side of the building. I thought it looked interesting, so I put it in my hand and did the rest of my shopping with it between my fingers. I got home, mounted it, and promptly forgot about it for almost a decade.”

Skvarla is now the, director of Penn State’s Insect Identification Lab and he says there might be ‘relic populations’ of this huge ‘Jurassic-Era’ bug to still be found. Great…
