Here are the top stories in Decatur-Avondale Estates today:

1. A bit of Baton Rouge in Decatur might soon become history. What began as a small gathering inside a living room, increased to a crowd of 100, then a parade full of people having a ball on Mead Road in Decatur. Emily and David Berg moved to Decatur from Baton Rouge, La., in 1996.
   When the family began to feel homesick, they thought to bring a bit of their Baton Rouge vibes to their new hometown, the Mead Road Mardi Gras. The parade has turned into a success as people have gathered in their elaborate customs, listening to music, dancing , and having a good time. This has been a tradition since 2014 and has raised over $40,000 for Decatur Education Foundation. With many great memories created, the Bergs and those who have been involved in the fundraising events are ready to “throw in the towel” or beads! The are now looking for people to take over the parade. If there are no takers, Decatur might need to say its good-bye’s to the Mead Road Mardi Gras. The deadline is on Feb. 4, 2023. 2. Georgia Labor Commissioner Bruce Thompson said there has been a decrease in some of the unemployment rates here in Georgia. This includes Southwest Georgia, which covers Decatur, Dougherty, Grady, and other neighboring areas. A year ago the rate was 3.2% compared to a 3.1% rate in more recent records. (WFXL FOX 31)
3. If you’re looking for a little fluff, purr, a bark or two, pet adoption might be for you! Decatur-Avondale Estates animal shelters have reports of thousands of animals needing a forever home. 4. The driver of a U-Haul van ran from the scene of an accident. The DeKalb County Police stated the vehicle smashed into a utility pole on Wednesday night, Jan. 25. The crash caused power outages in the Belvedere Park neighborhood. Georgia Power crews were called to the scene to help with the safely removing wires and debris. (Decaturish.com )
