Halifax’s Silver home insurance policy: is it good or bad?

Halifax’s standard home insurance policy falls in the bottom half of the 58 policies we analysed, with its buildings cover scoring 71% to achieve a ranking of 19th.

Its contents cover ranked 26th, with a score of 64%.

Best and worst features of the Halifax Silver home insurance policy

As standard, Halifax’s buildings policy covers the blockage of sewer pipes. Its contents policy, meanwhile, covers digital downloads and provides up to £25,000 for personal items taken away from the home.

Halifax’s buildings policy won’t cover oil fired boilers or boilers that have not been annually serviced. With the Silver policy, you’re charged a £500 excess for escape of water claims – a little on the steep side compared to other providers we examined.

It also isn’t among the providers in our survey that will contribute towards the cost of cancellation fees if you switch to them before renewal with another provider.

We’ve rated hundreds of policy details and picked out the best and worst elements of this cover.

Does Halifax offer different levels of cover?

Halifax also offers a higher level of cover through its premium Gold home insurance policy which scored 73% (9th) for buildings, and 65% ( 22nd) for contents.

The Gold policy provides more cover for contents (a maximum sum insured of £250,000 – as opposed to Silver’s £100,000 limit). You don’t have to pay higher excesses for water or subsidence claims.

Its Bronze policy has lower overall contents cover (a maximum of £50,000) and doesn’t offer any accidental damage cover.

Halifax also offers Gold and Bronze home insurance policies.

The Gold policy features more comprehensive cover at a higher price; the Bronze policy is cheaper but offers lower levels of cover. Log in to find out how we rated both policies.

How can you save money on Halifax home insurance?

The first offer an insurer makes isn’t necessarily the best they’re able to provide. So, before coughing up your cash, check what other insurers are offering for comparable cover and ask if your current insurer can better it.

Carefully consider what’s optionally included in the quote. You may want the confidence of an all-singing, all dancing policy – but certain add-ons might not be for you, or could duplicate cover you already have separately.

Where you buy your cover can sometimes make a difference to what you’ll end up paying, which is why we recommend checking prices through multiple comparison sites (where available) as well as trying them direct.

Halifax home insurance can be bought online, over the phone, or from the following price comparison websites:

  • Compare The Market
  • Confused.com
  • GoCompare
  • MoneySupermarket
