On Oct. 26, Eduardo Del Pozo and Regan Mast visited the principle campus of the Fairfax County Animal Shelter a couple of days forward of their marriage ceremony to search for a rescue puppy.

Del Pozo, 21, grew up with German shepherds, he tells PEOPLE. So when a shelter worker informed the couple {that a} 4-month-old German shepherd puppy named Daisy would quickly be available for adoption, they have been . The worker defined to the pair that the pup was among the many animals slated to be up for adoption on the grand opening of the shelter’s new department in Lorton.

The couple, each sergeants within the Marine Corps serving as navy police at Quantico, exchanged their vows and snapped a couple of photographs earlier than speeding to the shelter.

They have been first in line, says Rebecca Cavedon, the shelter’s communications supervisor. Shelter employees members have been reducing the ceremonial ribbon on the new facility when the bride and groom walked in.

After adopting Daisy, Eduardo and Regan shocked family and friends by bringing the puppy to the marriage reception.

“It symbolized us beginning our family,” Eduardo says. “My spouse and I are past excited.”
