The most inexpensive blanket had wires linking the controller to the mains which were just twisted together and covered in sealant, which served to conceal a second-rate connection. The plug supplied was the European two-pin range and it included an inexpensive and nasty UK adapter with pins much too near to the edge of the plug, which provides an electrical shock danger.

Another electrical blanket, likewise purchased from a seller on AliExpress, this one for £21, had a harmful cable television, fuse and plug. A 3rd one, purchased for £18 on the very same online market, once again had a dodgy and harmful UK three-pin plug adapter that might result in users getting an electrical shock.

Another blanket purchased on Wish had electrical wires that could quickly be taken out with little force, a clear indication of the poor build quality, Which? discovered in its tests.

Eight of the 11 electrical blankets Which? checked were badly made, with numerous basic safety cautions missing out on and in many cases half of the directions were not given up English. Nine of the items Which? examined stopped working to consist of either a UKCA mark or a CE mark, which show compliance with safety requirements.

Sue Davies, Which? head of customer security policy, said: “Electric blankets have actually risen in appeal as individuals seek to save money throughout the cost of living crisis, however our newest research study reveals that purchasing these items inexpensively on online markets can put your safety at danger.

“The government must urgently act to give online marketplaces greater legal responsibility for unsafe and illegal products sold on their sites so that consumers are no longer put at unnecessary risk of harm.”

In addition to safety issues, a few of the items were extremely ineffective. For example, whens it comes to a Cenlang heated shawl, £12.99 on AliExpress, and an electrical heated blanket poncho on eBay, £15.99, just 5% of the overall area of the particular items were heated up, the size of a sheet of A5 paper.
