An animal well-being charity is prompting individuals in Wales not to purchase dog types with overstated functions.
Hope Rescue provided the plea after 38 French Bulldogs were transferred to the organisation by Cardiff City Council after it was granted ownership of the dogs as part of a seizure under the Animal Welfare Act 2006.
The dogs had actually been reproduced for overstated functions such as thick nose ropes, fluffy coats, and their preferable colouring, with no factor to consider for the effect this had on their health.
The charity’s Operations Manager, Sara Rosser said: “Many of the dogs were struggling with problems with their eyes and breathing, as an outcome of this kind of severe breeding.
“One dog had such a big nose rope that it was triggering inflammation to his eyes and limiting his breathing.
“He required immediate surgical treatment to eliminate the nose rope and open his badly narrowed nostrils.
Many of the young dogs likewise had cherry eye which require surgical repair work”.
Ongoing prosecution
The information of the seizure become part of a continuous prosecution case that included a litter of young puppies, and a greatly pregnant female, called Nana, who later on delivered in the convenience of a foster home.
“It was a huge challenge finding space for this many dogs at the same time, and we are extremely grateful to our wonderful foster families for all their support,” Ms Rosser included.
“Once once again, we would advise the puppy purchasing public to hesitate previously purchasing dogs with severe functions, as this only fuels the need for rogue breeders and a life time of suffering for these poor dogs.
“Rescues are inundated with French bulldogs at the moment so, if you can’t source your dog from a rescue centre, then please think instead of purchasing a healthier breed from a reputable source”.
