Thousands called animal charity helpline to quit their family pets

The Scottish SPCA said the yearly figure had actually tripled in a single year given that 2021.

Snakes: Up from 14 to 42

Rats: Up from 16 to 54

The Scottish SPCA said the previous year was among the most difficult in its history.

Chief executive, Kirsteen Campbell, said: “We saw first-hand how individuals were needing to pick in between feeding themselves or their animal, or making the heart-breaking choice to offer their family pet up.

“The finest thing for animal well-being is to keep a human and an animal together, which’s what our bypassing aspiration is through this crisis.”
