Since August 2020, a dog living at a San Antonio shelter waited day in and day out for a family to rescue her. It wasn’t until this past Saturday that her happy ending finally came.

Reign was originally brought in as a surrender with her doggy sister because their owner’s job moved overseas. As a shy and reserved dog, Reign had trouble getting adopted. Her sister, however, was adopted quickly and for over 1,330 days, Reign waited at the Converse Animal Shelter.

The Texas-based animal shelter is finally celebrating Reign and her foster-to-adopt home after three and a half years of living in the confines of a shelter. In a foster-to-adopt home, Reign will be with the family as a trial run, with the hopes of them adopting her forever.

Newsweek reached out to Converse Animal Shelter via email for additional information.

Reign quickly adjusted to her new home, running inside and right onto the sofa to pick her spot, KENS5 reported. And she very much deserved that comfortable spot on the couch after being in the shelter for so long.

Reign’s new family wrote in a Facebook comment on the shelter’s page: “Reign is doing fabulous. We are so happy she’s a part of our family now.”

Even though it is thrilling to hear that Reign got her happy ending, there are still plenty of other animals confined in the shelter environment for months or years waiting to be adopted.

Some dogs are returned after being adopted, like Roxy. This dog has now been waiting over a year to be adopted again. Other dogs, unfortunately, only know shelter life. For nearly a decade, Jingles has been waiting to be adopted after she was rescued as a puppy on the side of the road in Romania. Hope can quickly fade for these animals.

Each year, 6.3 million pets enter U.S. shelters, an average of 17,260 a day, according to the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA). The number of dogs and cats taken in by pet shelters hit 46,807 during January 2023, an increase of 1,744 compared to January 2022, the 24Pet “Shelter Watch Report” found.

About 920,000 surrendered animals are euthanized every year. Shelters are striving to minimize euthanasia rates by promoting adoption campaigns, spaying and neutering programs, and behavior rehabilitation.
