The cost-of-living and housing crises has taken a toll on Western Australian pet homeowners with RSPCA WA reporting a 40 per cent bounce in give up requests.

Executive Manager Animal and Enforcement Operations Hannah Dreaver stated the affect of the cost-of residing and housing crises on pet homeowners was gravely regarding.

“Seeing the cost-of-living and housing crises still contributing so much to our surrender requests is disheartening but not surprising,” she stated.

“Recent victims are Flossy*, a Jack Russell terrier, and her proprietor Gordon*. Flossy got here into our care three weeks in the past as a result of Gordon had grow to be homeless and couldn’t access emergency shelter with a canine.

“As an older man, he had the selection between sleeping tough with 12-year-old Flossy and feeling unsafe for each of them, or having the prospect at a mattress for the evening.

“What a heartbreaking, terrible position to be in. I actually really feel for Gordon however I’m so glad he reached out and that we might give him some consolation understanding Flossy will likely be properly cared for.”

While cost-of-living and lack of pet-friendly leases proceed to characterize a 3rd of all give up requests, there was a shift within the information.

Recently, extra pet homeowners are surrendering as a result of they will’t discover anyplace to stay with their pet, quite than being unable to afford their pet’s care.

“The RSPCA is helping in all situations it can, but we simply can’t accommodate all of the animals submitted for surrender and we are concerned for the welfare of the animals in these ongoing situations,” Ms Dreaver stated.

Most requests relate to dogs, with about half as many for cats, adopted by rabbits, guinea pigs, mice and birds.

Of greater than 1,300 respondents to RSPCA WA’s recent annual pet census, 78 per cent stated that they had observed a rise within the cost of pet meals over the previous 12 months and 58 per cent noticed a rise within the cost of veterinary providers.

Twenty p.c of these respondents stated they had been shopping for inexpensive pet meals and 34 per cent stated they had been spending much less on themselves to be able to afford to care for his or her pet.
