A dog who patiently waits by the window for his owner to come home every day has been dubbed “the cutest thing ever.”
In a video shared to TikTok by Abby Schulte (@harveytherescue), Harvey the pitbull is seen sitting quietly with his nose poking through the curtains. When he spots Abby’s boyfriend arriving, his tail immediately starts wagging and he turns and runs straight for the front door.
Since being shared on November 11, the cute clip has received over 12,000 likes and over 98,000 views.
How does my dog know when I’m coming home?
If you’ve ever wondered how your dog knows what time to expect you home, it turns out, the answer is very simple.
According to Ali Smith, dog trainer and the CEO and Founder of Rebarkable, it could be down to sound, smell, or just your dog’s routine.
“We have to remember that our dogs are much more naturally perceptive than we are. So it could be that they hear the gate open, the garage door open, or the sound of your keys,” she told Newsweek.
“Beyond that, they know and understand some measure of time, such that your dog will be able to tell that at roughly this time of day (e.g. sundown, sunrise) this thing happens,” she said. “It’s much the same as when you instinctively know when dinner time is!”
‘We know who his favorite is’
Alongside the video, Abby wrote: “My dog at promptly 5:30pm everyday patiently staring out the window waiting for dad to arrive home.”
As soon as he sees his dad, Harvey begins excitedly wagging his tail before rushing across the room to the front door. After skidding across the wooden floor into his dad’s legs, Harvey begins happily bounding around the living room.
Abby adopted Harvey from a shelter five years ago. His previous owners abandoned him in the middle of a hurricane, and he was returned to the shelter four times before the age of one. His rough early life left him with separation anxiety and a fear of men, making his love for Abby’s boyfriend even more heartwarming.
Now six years old and happily settled in his forever home, Abby has shared several videos of Harvey and his “dad” cuddling, dancing and playing together, as well as making plenty of jokes about being the third wheel in her relationship.
TikTokers couldn’t get enough of Harvey, with one user named petra calling the pup a “Daddy’s boy.”
“Welllll we know who his favorite is,” joked Shelby.
“That is the cutest thing ever!!!” said KAK.
While Caroline Doran commented: “Girl, he stole your man.”
