‘On edge’ Penrith publicans shut their doors over Appleby Horse Fair crowd issues

As clubs in Appleby shut their doors throughout of the town’s yearly horse fair, licensees in Penrith chose to do the same on last Saturday night, leaving the town much quieter than normal.

Fears of difficulty and condition following the bumper horse reasonable crowds lagged the publicans’ choice in both towns.

Most of the clubs in Penrith closed their doors at 7pm on Saturday, with one Penrith property owner confessing he was “on edge” throughout the conventional gypsy and tourist event.

“You’re on edge all the time during the horse fair weekend,” said Andy Monroe, property owner of the Robin Hood pub, in Penrith’s King Street.

“We didn’t see a great deal of trouble during the day but we decided to close in the evening as a precaution. The hot weather brought a lot more people this year and we didn’t want to risk not being able to cope with any problems,” he included.

Other clubs, consisting of the Board and Elbow, Grey Goat, Fell Bar and the Woolpack likewise closed their doors at 7pm on Saturday night, with a lot of resuming on Sunday afternoon.

Cumbria cops validated that 42 arrests were made and 20 automobiles were taken throughout this year’s reasonable weekend.

The fair was among the busiest in recent years, with almost 1,200 bowtops and caravans assembling on the Cumbrian town for the yearly event.

New for the 2023 occasion was a short-lived bar which supplied a place far from the town centre for individuals to consume.

Around 2,000 individuals went to on Saturday night and there were no occurrences reported.

On Saturday, 3rd June, cops and the DVSA performed an operation on the A685 as individuals started to show up in the location. It led to 120 automobiles being stopped and tickets provided for more than 20 offenses varying from vehicle problems and insecure loads to driving without a seat belt and driving without due care.

Rob Melloy, RSPCA chief inspector, said: “We’re dissatisfied in the variety of tired horses we’ve seen over the reasonable.

“Some people were working their horses too hard in the heat and our vets were busy helping them.”

Gypsy and tourist agent on the MASCG, Billy Welch, said: “We’ve had terrific weather condition and it’s been a fantastic fair.

“Everyone I’ve spoken to has thoroughly enjoyed themselves and had a really great time of it.”
