This is the time of year I take out my extremely first cookbook, “Never Trust A Hungry Cook- A Riverview Collection.” I composed it when I remained in college– in fact there wasn’t much writing included, simply typing on a manual typewriter. I stuck notes in all my mom’s buddies’ mail boxes requesting their finest dishes, and they sent their finest! Popular cooks, these ladies sat right down and thoroughly drew up their preferred dishes, numerous bied far from their own moms and grandmas. This cookbook was initially released around 1980, method prior to the ease of fast cellular phone photos of dishes that might be texted in a zippy flash. No, there was time involved, along with discovering a pen and note card and a postage stamp.

Every year that passes, and every year I scan the pages of this cookbook around this time of year, I consider Susie Hunt dropping in her tracks and putting in the time to thoroughly compose her dish for lemon pie. I keep in mind Cotty Kale requiring time to copy her dish for tomato pie, and Flo Satterfield, Cotty’s mom, composing her directions for beer muffins and all getting these dishes to me.

The initial cookbooks remain in tatters. The pages are splashed with cake batter and butter and barely any of the used pages are still connected to the spinal column of the book. For many years, individuals have actually sent out images of their cookbooks held together with elastic band. These cookbooks, or need to I state stacks of pages, all appear to remain on folks’ racks. Which’s since of the charming ladies who shared their scrumptious and classic dishes.

Mary Davis’s shrimp dip, made with Italian dressing, is a year-round favorite in our family since it’s so simple therefore tasty, as is Mrs. Paul Thompson’s artichoke dip. Susan Cobb’s Mississippi Mud Cake is perfect for any celebration. Judy Street’s banana bread is magnificent and ideal to have on turn over the vacations, as is Jane Ragland’s beer cheese spread. With Christmas turning up, Barbara Murray’s seafood gumbo is a crowd pleaser for the vacation event.

I scan this cookbook searching for the dish for boiled custard, however am constantly sidetracked– both the dishes and the unique ladies who sent them. Primarily I am soaked up by the art. The late Laura Evans showed this book, and her whimsical, dynamic, wonderful character comes out in every sketch.

Maddin Corey asked me to republish this little book a couple of years back, and I did. I’m glad to have these dishes in a genuine book that opens and closes without spreading pages all over. Primarily I’m glad for the impressive ladies for bringing out their finest, not simply for vacations, however a lot of every day of their lives.
