A video of a less than impressed rescue dog has gone viral on TikTok. User @wwjasperdo posted the video, which has received 1.5 million views, of the adopted dog, Jasper, in various scenarios with a disappointed look on his face.
Initially, the video says, “I should adopt this dog and give him a happy life,” then cuts to shots of Jasper with toys, sitting on a sofa and sticking his head out of the car window, all the time not looking too happy.
The Humane Society reports that the number of dogs adopted from shelters has increased from 28 percent in 2017 to 40 percent in 2022. The percentage of dogs taken in as strays or caught outside has decreased by 1 percent since 2017.
“Approximately 6.3 million companion animals enter U.S. animal shelters nationwide every year,” the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA) said on its website.
“Of those, approximately 3.1 million are dogs and 3.2 million are cats. We estimate that the number of dogs and cats entering U.S. shelters annually has declined from approximately 7.2 million in 2011. The biggest decline was in dogs (from 3.9 million to 3.1 million),” the ASPCA said.
There are many reasons why a person may give up a pet, but according to the ASPCA, “pet problems” are the main cause, at 47 percent. It defines such problems as:
- Problematic behaviors
- Aggressive behaviors
- Grew larger than expected
- Health problems the owner couldn’t handle

The ASPCA’s National Rehoming Survey refers to a study in which people living in poverty with pets cited high stress in the household, and this increased the likelihood that an owner would give up the pet. The study also found that when these people were given access to solutions, such as medical care and insurance, they preferred not to re-home their pets, which suggests that it isn’t poverty that is driving owners to give up their pets but a lack of access to pet care.
Some TikTok users found the disgruntled dog in the video hilarious.
User no. wrote, “No because my dog is the same and he scoffs and sighs at me when I ask him to cuddle like, I could have left you there bro.”
User Meredith said, “My dog’s face is like this too! We call her the Private Investigator. It’s better assuming she’s on the job than just disappointed in us all the time.”
User Krista Brisk commented, “He looks well loved, that’s for sure.”
