The North Bay and District Humane Society is commemorating the main opening of its new pet adoption and animal wellness centre on Main Street West.

With the opening of the brand-new centre, Phoebe, a young shepherd mix puppy, has actually discovered her caring family with Christine Brereton and her 2 boys – Trent and Reed.

Phoebe is the very first animal embraced out of the brand-new shelter.

“That was unforeseen and sort of a true blessing,” said Brereton, with a chuckle.

“We lost our dog in October and the timing simply felt right.”

Soon, Phoebe will not be the only animal to discover a caring family.

The gentle society’s newly-opened $2.4 million animal health and animal adoption centre has 50 percent more room and can house in between 60-80 animals at a time.

It consists of 12 dog kennels, 3 kitten and cat care spaces, 2 little animal spaces, an animal fulfill and welcome room for adopters and 5 brand-new outside dog workout locations.

“Just to be able to move some animals in this early morning is truly something,” said the society’s executive director Liam Cullin.

For the last a number of months, the shelter has actually been at optimal capability.

Staff said each year they discover houses for about 1,400 animals.

Cullin said this brand-new centre will permit the gentle society to be the “northern Ontario center” for animal well-being.

“We work relentlessly throughout the year bringing animals in,” he said.

“From all over, not just Ontario, however we have partners in Manitoba and we have partners in Kentucky that we deal with.”

Last fall, Pet Valu contributed $250,000 towards the build through the ‘Companions For Change‘ sponsorship program.

“We saw the requirement right now. This is the entrance to the rest of Ontario as far as adoptions,” said Adam Woodward, Pet Valu’s Senior VP of Franchise Store Operations.

“We really began this relationship with the gentle society in 2018 with the rescue truck. 1,800 animals have actually been embraced through that relationship throughout the years.”

The old shelter building, which lies right next to the brand-new center, will still be utilized by staff as a pound and animal medical facility when a rescued animal is generated.

“Our next huge job is going to be a growth of our animal center,” said Cullin.

“Right now we have actually got one surgical suite.”

The brand-new building will now be a brand-new short-term home for our four-legged good friends while they wait patiently to discover their caring family, staff said.

“They simply require some care and love,” said Brereton.

The grand opening comes a week after a parvovirus outbreak was declared in the community, requiring the society to make the dicfficul choice to suspend some services.
