An elderly pony discovered skinny and struggling to walk in “truly miserable” circumstances needed to be put down as “the kindest course of action”.
The RSPCA is interesting for data on the horse, who was deserted in a “barren” subject within the East Riding of Yorkshire. A member of the general public raised issues in regards to the mare, who was on land close to East Cottingwith, a village between York and Howden.
“Further checks found that the elderly pony was struggling to walk and did not have adequate shelter,” an RSPCA spokesman stated. “She was in a poor body condition, with hips, ribs and spine clearly visible and she was suffering with significantly overgrown hooves, some of which were curling up towards her legs.”
Bransby Horses contacted the RSPCA and a vet was referred to as out on 7 December.
“But the pony’s health was so poor that, sadly, the vet decided the kindest course of action was to put her to sleep,” the RSPCA spokesman stated.
The pony was not chipped and the RSPCA is looking for her proprietor, or “anyone who may have information on how she came to be left at this rural location in such a poor state”.
RSPCA inspector Tom Hutton, who’s investigating the case, stated: “It seems like this poor pony was deserted in a distant and barren subject which had beforehand been utilized by a neighborhood farmer to maintain pigs, though it hasn’t been grassed for a while.
“She had nothing to graze on and no different supply of meals and he or she was sadly in a really poor situation struggling with horrendously lengthy hooves.
