An elderly dog who was discovered by RSPCA officers in a “shocking” state is now entirely unrecognisable after having 2kg of matted fur slashed off.
The “sweet and gentle” puppy – who is called Larry, and is believed to be 13-years-old – had actually experienced months of overlook after he was abandoned in the Bradfield Road location of Crewe, prior to being rescued by the RSPCA, and was discovered with fur so greatly matted that it left his face almost entirely obscured so that he couldn’t see.
He was discovered previously this month (2 May) caked in faeces and urine – which had actually formed thick and solidified dreadlocks around his head, tail and feet.
Larry is a Poodle/Maltese-type pooch, according to the RSPCA, however he was really in such an “appalling” state when he was initially discovered, that officers said it was difficult to inform what breed he was.
After saving Larry, and finding that he wasn’t microchipped, RSPCA officers moved the elderly dog to the animal well-being charity’s Greater Manchester Animal Hospital in Salford, so veterinarians might provide him the care he was worthy of and, most-importantly, get to work slashing off his fur.
Once their work was done, the veterinarians revealed that they shaved almost 2kg of fur off Larry’s coat.
RSCPA centre supervisor Kay Hawthorn, who is really presently promoting Larry, said he has actually been provided “a new lease of life”.
“Under the huge matted clumps of fur, a sweet and gentle dog has emerged who’s been given a new lease of life,” she explained.
“He was struggling to get around properly and it must have been so uncomfortable for him, but now he’s enjoying running around again, which is something he’s probably not been able to do for a long time, and given his advancing years, he’s surprisingly sprightly.”
While “surprisingly sprightly” Larry might now be taking pleasure in a 2nd possibility at living a deserving life, the RSPCA is still bent on examining his case as they think he was either abandoned or “intentionally delegated wander off, therefore is interesting anybody who identifies the dog to come forward.
RSPCA inspector Louise Showering said Larry remained in an “appalling” condition, including: “His coat looked like a pile of dirty old rags and it’s likely he’d been neglected for a prolonged period of time.”
