A dog rescue centre has announced its closure amid financial pressures.

Meadowgreen Dog Rescue Centre has been established in Hales for nearly 20 years and has rehomed hundreds of dogs during that time.

The family-run centre will close on November 30 due to rising costs, the knock-on effect of Covid lockdowns and the volume of dogs seeking homes.

Owner Cherie Williams said: “We never dreamt we’d have to do this, we thought we’d be here forever.

“It’s quite distressing and very, very sad.”

Meadowgreen is based at Ms Williams’ family home and has housed roughly 30 dogs at any time.

Some members of staff have been working alongside the family at the centre since it opened in 2004.

The kennels have been home to the charity Greyhound Trust Eastern Counties which is also closing due to the lack of an affordable alternative to Meadowgreen.

Ms Williams added: “We’ve done a lot of good for the unwanted dogs in our care and made a lot of people happy.

“We’re very grateful to a lot of people, it’s been an absolute privilege.”

Seven dogs are still waiting to be adopted and more information can be found on the Meadowgreen website.
