A Newfoundland dog and a group of human rescuers banded together to help a golden retriever struggling to stay afloat.

A “busy day” for the Douglas Coastguard Rescue Team – based out of the Isle of Man — began with the “notable” animal rescue, according to the team’s March 17 Facebook post.

In the post, the team explained that they received a dog rescue call on the morning of March 17 after a concerned citizen “came across a black Newfoundland dog in distress and wanted his attention.”

The canine directed the Good Samaritan’s attention to his golden retriever friend, who was “in trouble and struggling” in the waters of a nearby harbor.

After spotting the golden retriever, the man went onto a boat in the harbor and grabbed the dog.

He was “able to grab hold of the dog as he was going down the harbour in the flow of the river, at this point the dog was starting to go under so was lucky to be saved,” the Douglas Coastguard Rescue Team wrote on Facebook about the pet’s near-drowning.

The Douglas Coastguard Rescue arrived at the harbor shortly after the Good Samaritan secured the dog. The rescue team helped the concerned citizen complete the canine rescue, carefully hauling the golden retriever to dry land.

Photos from the moment show rescuers grabbing the golden retriever and the dog drying off after getting out of the water.

The Douglas Coastguard Rescue Team didn’t forget about the golden retriever’s Newfoundland dog friend. On social media, the team said they were “able to reunite [the dog] with his mate back at our station to await the police to collect them and locate their owner.”

The rescue team closed their Facebook post about the rescue by expressing gratitude to the person who made it all possible.
