An abandoned 8-year-old dog who was found in an empty property is ready to find a forever home.

Reece Puppycups, an American Staffordshire terrier, has been nursed back to good health by veterinarians and volunteers at the Associated Humane Popcorn Park Shelter in New Jersey.

Sandy Hickman, the shelter’s media coordinator told Newsweek: “She was left in a bedroom without food and water and was very sick.”

According to a heartbreaking Facebook post shared by the shelter, she was “in desperate need of care” when she was rescued in November last year.

Hickman explained that the owners had been evicted from the property one week before she was discovered by The South Toms River Police Department.

The Eviction Lab at Princeton University reports that 34 cities and 10 U.S. states have seen more than a million evictions in the past 12 months. Unfortunately, animals also lose their homes. According to People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals American (PETA), there are an estimated 70 million homeless cats and dogs in the country.

“When Reeses was finally found, she was emaciated [and] dehydrated,” states the social media post that was shared on April, 14.

But it wasn’t just tender love and care that she needed, but several tumors removed too. Now, four months on, Reeses is thriving and ready to move into a loving home.

Hickman told Newsweek: “She has gained over 15 pounds since her arrival and underwent surgery as well as a plethora of additional medical care.

“She is very friendly with people and has no shyness about her. She’s outgoing, affectionate, and very playful. She’s also well-behaved and has had plenty of training.”

Reeses has moved on from the terrible experience and has refused to let it break her. The shelter says she has a great zest for life and they think it will be easy for her to become the only pet in a home.

“She loves people,” said Hickman. “But she can be a little exuberant when playing, so a home with older kids is best.”

She is described as “affectionate, friendly, and an all-around great girl,” on Facebook. So far, the post sharing her story has racked up over 890 likes and plenty of comments.

One user said: “People just plain suck to leave her alone. I hope she finds a loving home now.”

“Please someone open your heart and give Reeses her forever loving home soon,” said another.

Newsweek has reached out to The South Toms River Police Department for comment.
