Defence attorney Gerry Coyle – representing Ryan Seel – said his customer resided in a property which struggled with damp and leakages. He included that the set were on Universal Credit and ‘living in poverty’ and not able to pay for veterinarians charges.

“What happened with the dogs was not because they don’t love and care for them, but for financial reasons,” he informed Magistrates.

Brett Chappell, protecting Seel’s partner Debbie Slater, appealed for leniency and informed the court about the couple’s other dog – a Shar Pei – which was healthy and well.

“What occurred was not a purposeful act of cruelty, however her efforts fell well except what is appropriate,” said Mr Chappell.

The couple were prohibited from keeping animals for ten years and were each handed a one year neighborhood penalty with 10 rehab days.

Handing out the restriction, chairman of the Magistrates Paul Farquhar informed them: “You inflicted a high level of suffering and prolonged ill treatment on those poor dogs.”

Seel should likewise finish 100 hours overdue work and Slater was offered a 4 month curfew. The set were each purchased to pay £414 in expenses.
