The Animal Rescue League of Berks County has issued a Code Blue for pet homeowners in Reading and West Reading.

The National Weather Service is forecasting a low of 23 levels with winds at 10 to twenty mph Tuesday evening into Wednesday.

In town, the Code Blue is in impact from 4 p.m. Tuesday to 11 a.m. Wednesday.

Anyone who owns, possesses or has custody of a canine in Reading should deliver the animal inside their residence throughout the code, apart from supervised and vital lavatory breaks and train. The measure is a part of the Reading City Code.

The Code Blue for West Reading is in impact from 2 a.m. to 10 a.m. Wednesday.

In September, an ordinance was added to the Code of the Borough of West Reading (Chapter 152, part 152-3) that states the proprietor of an animal is required to briefly “bring and keep it in his dwelling for its protection from the elements” when the National Weather Service predicts a wind chill temperature of 20 levels or beneath or within the case of precipitation with temperatures beneath 32 levels. It additionally states that the “owner of an animal shall not allow the animal to remain unattended or unsupervised outdoors” throughout a code declaration.

“Additionally, non-compliance can result in the animal being removed by an animal control officer from the property and impounded at the Animal Rescue League of Berks County,” acknowledged a launch issued by the ARL Tuesday. “Owners may also be subject to a fine of no more than $600 and a citation by section 152-15 of the CBWR.”

“The cold temperatures predicted for our area are potentially life-threatening for animals left outside to fend for themselves,” stated Hayden Carroll, the ARL’s division of animal safety supervisor, noting the advice is for the entire county, though solely enforceable in Reading and West Reading. “We hope residents take this threat seriously and bring their pets inside.”

Any person witnessing an unsupervised canine left outdoors within the components inside West Reading or Reading ought to name the ARL at 610-373-8830.
