A DORSET dog rescue says it is completely full and warns that dogs face being euthanised by the pounds if spaces aren’t freed at the charity.

Waggy Tails Rescue in Wimborne receives daily phone calls from pet owners wanting to give up their animals and say demand is too great for their service capabilities.

Dogs purchased during Covid lockdowns are among the most regular type of pet taken in by the rehoming charity, based in Magna Road.

A spokesperson for Waggy Tails Rescue said: “Animal Rescues are currently overflowing with dogs waiting to be rehomed. Those dogs waiting in the pounds only have seven days after which time, if not offered a rescue place, can be euthanised.

“We take dogs from the pounds who are under threat of being euthanised and offer them a second chance.

“The owners of some of these dogs can be traced but cannot afford the fee to reclaim them, but far too many have out of date microchip details.

“Waggy Tails Rescue is currently full and still every day we are taking calls from people wanting to give up their pets. The lockdown pups are still filtering through, oldies usurped by a younger dog, inappropriate purchases in haste or online, dogs from overseas with no back up in the UK – the list goes on.”

In order to combat the rising demand levels, the charity is appealing for dry food donations that can be used to feed their increasing dog numbers.

It also stressed pet owners in need should still contact them if they were experiencing difficulties in looking after their animal.

The spokesperson added: “We do all we can to help, so if you are struggling with a pet please give us a ring on 01202 875000. Our office is open from 10am to 4pm weekdays and until 1pm at the weekend. We will be pleased to advise you of your options.

“We also support other rescues and the foodbanks with donations when we are able, but with so many mouths to feed at the moment, we are putting out a Christmas wish list for good quality dry food, tins of Chappie and Dentastix. If you are able to donate anything, your gift can be delivered to the Sanctuary, Helen’s House, 143 Magna Road.”
