KUALA LUMPUR: With the variety of homeless and deserted animals on the rise yr after yr, one organisation is staying true to its title by taking care of the strays in its group.

On a mission to assist road dogs, Canine Cares stands agency in its perception that sterilisation, basic veterinary care, and rehoming are the way in which to go to deal with the problem of stray overpopulation.

What makes Canine Cares stand out from different animal rescue teams, then? Its puppy college, the place they train young pooches – and their people – basic socialisation and different expertise.

Canine Cares founder Diong Chae Lian stated she and her husband began the varsity as they didn’t need new homeowners to surrender on their dogs simply because they didn’t have the talents to handle them.

As she chatted with FMT Lifestyle, two of Diong’s dogs cuddled as much as her facet, not eager to be disregarded. “These are Jack and Sophie, both fosters I’d planned to rehome. But in the process of nursing them back to health, we got attached and couldn’t part with them after.”

Asked how she obtained into rescue work, Diong recalled it started within the early 2000s when considered one of her neighbours obtained a brand new puppy. Owing to the calls for of their job, Diong ended up dog-sitting so much and ultimately took the puppy in.

The baby was ultimately rehomed when the neighbour moved away, “and that was the start of it”, Diong stated.

As she continued with rescue work, Diong started to find it was an uphill job, given the never-ending stream of deserted animals.

She and her husband had been then impressed by American veterinarian and animal behaviourist Ian Dunbar, who advocated that if folks had been taught the right way to deal with dogs from the puppy stage, they had been extra prone to love them at the same time as they outgrew the lovable part into maturity.

Calling it a “moment of revelation”, they began their puppy college – aptly named Puppy School – in 2010, held at Jaya One in Section 13, Petaling Jaya, to today.

“We want to help people stay in love with their dogs,” she stated, including that some homeowners had are available not even realizing the right way to maintain their puppies.

“This is why it’s vital to teach new pet owners basic skills, as well as give the dogs obedience and etiquette lessons.”

Canine Cares additionally runs a Okay-9 cab service, which supplies floor transportation for furkids who want a raise to daycare, boarding, grooming, or veterinary appointments.

“During the pandemic, many pet owners couldn’t send their furkids to the clinic to get their vaccinations, so we offered help in that regard, too,” Diong defined.

The organisation additional runs an initiative known as SNIP – the Seputeh Neutering Initiative Project – aimed toward sterilising stray dogs in neighbourhoods by means of the trap-neuter-release method.

Ultimately, Diong believes the problem of strays and animal overpopulation would require the implementing and finetuning of laws, during which municipal councils have a task to play.

For instance, “the by-laws in regulating petshop licences could be stricter, because when cute animals are put in shop windows, people are tempted to buy them, and the chances of them being abandoned later rise, too”, she stated.

“It’s a sad thing to see.”
