  • A lady, 69, was killed by an alligator in South Carolina.

  • Rescue efforts were disrupted when the alligator appeared and began “safeguarding” the female’s body.

  • This is the 2nd deadly alligator attack in the location in under a year.

A 69-year-old female was assaulted and killed by an alligator while walking her dog in a special community in South Carolina, authorities said.

It is the 2nd deadly alligator attack on the upscale Hilton Head Island in under a year.

The female was discovered unresponsive at the edge of a lagoon near a golf course in the Spanish Wells neighborhood in Hilton Head Island, Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office said in a statement.

Rescue efforts were temporarily disrupted when the alligator appeared and began “safeguarding” the female’s body, the constable’s workplace said.

The dead female was called Holly Jenkins, according to regional outlet WYFF4.com.

The womad left home to walk her dogs around 7 a.m. on Tuesday, and member of the family went searching for her when the dogs returned without her, Maj Angela Viens,or Beaufort County Sheriff’s Off spokesmanice, informed The New York Times.

She was found by a relative who then called emergency situation services at around 9:30 am, the outlet reported.

The 9-foot, 9-inch male alligator was euthanized and eliminated from the lagoon, the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources said.

On Thursday, the department launched the findings from the alligator’s autopsy. It verified the reptile was associated with the female’s death, SCDNR said, per Wyff4.com.

Alligator attacks are more typical near bodies of water and when a family pet accompanies an individual, said Jay Butfiloski, the alligator program planner with the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources.

“It’s not likely for them to leave the water to come after somebody,”  he informed The New York Times. “They’re not going to chase you down the fairway in these playing golf neighborhoods.”
