A bit extra from our interview with ex-Nato chief Lord Robertson now.
Earlier this week, the outgoing head of the British Army, General Sir Patrick Saunders, recommended British women and men might face a call-up to the military within the occasion of a struggle with Russia.
Sky News requested Lord Robertson if Britain might find yourself combating Russia immediately if Ukraine loses.
He mentioned the alliance’s constitution, which says an attack on one member is taken into account an attack on all, will “ensure that Vladimir Putin stands effectively off from there”.
But he added: “That does not imply to say that he is not going to go in different instructions as effectively. And in the end, we will be within the firing line.”
NATO ‘not threatening’ Russia
Lord Robertson mentioned NATO was “not threatening Russia” and the alliance was “purely defensive”.
“We’re defending the freedoms that now we have grown used to ever since NATO was created,” he mentioned. “But now we have to ensure that the entire of the inhabitants is engaged.”
He defined that conscription is “precisely the incorrect debate to be having as a result of conscription just isn’t a great way of each setting out defences, despite the fact that some generals at the moment are starting to advocate that”.
He added: “Conscripts should not helpful. Vladimir Putin has discovered that out solely too effectively.
“So we have to ensure that our defence expenditure is at a degree that is sensible for the sort of threats that we would face sooner or later.
“If we will defend Britain and if we’re going to deter aggression, then we have to have a strong defence of this nation.”
