Maui cops suspend placard program after ‘non-essential’ individuals flood circulation websites

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) – Just hours after introducing it, Maui cops have actually suspended a placard program developed to accelerate gain access to into West Maui after circulation locations were flooded with individuals.

Maui cops said they saw “overwhelming demand” from non-essential individuals and visitors.

Video shot by Hawaii News Now reveals numerous cars and trucks lined up for the circulation locations.

The suspension of the program is in impact “until further notice.”

“We will continue with essential workers and West Maui residents as before,” MPD said.

The placard circulations were occurring at Keopuolani Park and Napili Park.

The Maui Police Department said the placards were developed for effective traffic management and to focus on the safety of all roadway users as healing efforts continue into another week.

However, authorities specify about who will get a placard.

The placards will be provided to the following:

  • West Maui Residents
  • West Maui Resort Personnel
  • First Responder Personnel
  • Medical Personnel
  • Utility Personnel
  • County of Maui Personnel
  • Supply Transport Personnel
  • Volunteer Personnel

Residents should reveal evidence of residency through a driverʻs license or state recognition card with a West Maui address. Identification cards without a street address will need an accompanying energy expense as evidence of West Maui residency.

All workers should reveal evidence of work through a legitimate company-issued recognition card.

Volunteers will be given 72-hour gain access to passes. At completion of the 72 hours, a brand-new placard will require to be obtained.

For concerns relating to placards, MPD said on-site workers at the Keopulani and Napili Parks will be available. Do not call 911 or the cops department’s non-emergency number as those lines require to stay open for emergency situations and require service.

Anyone going to Keopuolani Park to obtain their placard needs to go into through Wahinepio Avenue and exit through Kanaloa Avenue.

MPD said no entryway into West Maui will be enabled without a placard beginning Tuesday at 5 p.m.

West Maui homeowners and West Maui resort workers will be enabled access to West Maui through Waihee. All other placard holders should go into West Maui through Maalaea. The just exit from West Maui will be through Maalaea for all homeowners and placard holders.
