GUADALAJARA, Mexico — Canadian tennis star Leylah Fernandez has a date within the closing 16 on the Guadalajara Open after knocking off Thirteenth-seeded Elise Mertens of Belgium on Tuesday.
Fernandez, of Laval, Quebec, defeated Mertens 6-3, 6-4 within the WTA 1000 event and can play the winner of a round-of-32 match between Americans Madison Keys and Emma Navarro.
Both gamers had three aces within the one-hour, 34-minute match. Mertens had eight double faults whereas Fernandez had 5.
Fernandez saved 4 of 11 break factors whereas her opponent saved two of six.
